The Buyer is responsible for assisting the Purchasing Manager and Materials Manager with acquisition of materials, components, tools and equipment.  This position requires a strong working knowledge of purchasing, including pricing negotiations, interpersonal skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced industrial environment. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate with management, engineering, manufacturing, operations, and other departments to define purchasing requirements for components, tools, and equipment.
  • Issue Requests for Quotations (RFQ) and analyses quotes and bids.
  • Issue Purchase Orders (PO) in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with or negotiate best price, delivery, terms of payment and purchase conditions, tax exemptions, price escalation, and other factors impacting costs.
  • Expedite orders to ensure timely deliveries of components and materials to meet production schedules.
  • Closes out purchase orders following confirmation of the successful completion of all contractual and procedural requirements.
  • Interpret fabrication and machining technical drawings, tolerances, and material specifications.
  • Ensure quality control in accordance with the company ISO-9001:2008 Quality Assurance System (QAS).
  • Maintain a safe work environment in accordance with company HSE standards and procedures.
  • Interact and support a broad spectrum of personnel internal and external to the company. Work effectively and efficiently in both team-based and independent working environments to reduce costs and add value to the organization.
  • Provide effective management of subordinates to achieve desired results. Attributes necessary to meet this need may include communications, motivation, team building, employee involvement, diplomacy, delegating, etc. skills as well as confidence and enthusiasm.
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the Purchasing Manager.

 

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Individuals must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed or are able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in order to safely perform the essential responsibilities of the job. Must be able to read, write, and speak English to SPL 7.  Must show proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be capable of verbal communication, hearing, and have adequate vision for reading small print and diagrams.  Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and an ability to adjust focus.  Must have sufficient manual dexterity to be able to operate all office equipment including, but not limited to: computers, fax machines, copy machines, and telephones.

 

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENT

Must be able to reason, analyze, prioritize, conceptualize, make judgments, and solve problems.  Must be able to multi-task and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three (3) years experience as a buyer for the aerospace, commercial marine, or heavy automotive industries; or
  • Five (5) years experience as a buyer of ferrous and non-ferrous alloy materials, casting, forgings, machined and fabricated components, bearings, hydraulic pumps and motors, valves, power transmission gears, gearboxes, electrical and electronic components, internal combustion engines, and mechanical assemblies; and
  • Experience with Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) software such as Syteline® or MAPICS; and
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications software.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management, Technical Management, Industrial Engineering, or any physical science or business administration; or
  • Five (5) years experience as a buyer for the aerospace, commercial marine, or heavy automotive industries; or
  • Seven (7) years experience as a buyer of ferrous and non-ferrous alloy materials, casting, forgings, machined and fabricated components, bearings, hydraulic pumps and motors, valves, power transmission gears, gearboxes, electrical and electronic components, internal combustion engines, and mechanical assemblies; and
  • Experience with Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) software such as Syteline® or MAPICS; and
  • Experience in compliance with ABS, DNV, LRS, BV, GL, CCS or other naval classification society rules; and
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications software.
